Environmental Product Declarations for Iraqi manufacturers

ERKE is the named Life Cycle Assessment author on Environmental Product Declarations completed for 28 manufacturers, covering 75 products in 8 countries — including a cement declaration and a steel pipe declaration, both declared per tonne. Alongside them sit 62 products certified to GREENGUARD Gold for low chemical emissions. We model the LCA, draft the declaration and coordinate the independent verifier. We are never the verifier.

How this works

We produce EPDs. We do not verify them.

An Environmental Product Declaration is only worth what its independent verification is worth. Under ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A2 the party that models the Life Cycle Assessment must not be the party that verifies it. So the work splits cleanly, and we say which half is ours.

ERKE does this: selects the Product Category Rules, collects your primary production data, models the Life Cycle Assessment, drafts the declaration, and appoints and manages the independent third-party verifier.

ERKE never does this: verify, approve or register a declaration. Verification is carried out by an independent verifier appointed under the programme operator's rules. Registration and publication are done by the programme operator — IBU, the International EPD System, EPD-Global, SCS Global Services, Global GreenTag or UL Environment. ERKE is none of those bodies.

Twenty of the declarations we authored are registered in a public library under a registration number anyone can check. Across those twenty, seven different named independent verifiers signed the work off, and every one of them is listed, by name, next to the declaration they verified.

Track record

Seventy-five products, twenty-eight manufacturers, eight countries

That is the completed Environmental Product Declaration record, with a further 33 EPDs in progress. Twenty of the completed declarations carry a registration number issued by a programme operator, a declared unit, a publication date and a named verifier, so anyone can pull them out of a public library and read them. None of that rests on our word alone.

Independent confirmation, on a programme operator's own site rather than ours: the International EPD System's library entry for EPD-IES-0018062 records the LCA practitioner as an ERKE address. See also EPD-IES-0004868:001 and EPD-IES-0006341:001.

Cement and steel

The two product categories Iraqi industry actually builds with

Two of the declarations we authored cover exactly the categories that dominate Iraqi manufacturing. Both have now reached the end of their five-year validity period, so they stand as authored work and evidence of capability, not as current declarations.

The completed steel record runs wider than the pipe declaration above: it also covers structural steel hollow sections and structural built-ups from a Chinese mill, and steel structures from a Turkish fabricator. Cement, ceramic and porcelain tile, concrete block, aluminium composite panel, paint, thermal insulation, plaster and mortar all sit in the same completed record.

Indoor air quality

GREENGUARD Gold — the other half of the product record

An Environmental Product Declaration answers what a product costs the planet. GREENGUARD Gold answers what it does to the air in the room it is installed in. It is UL Solutions’ certification for low chemical emissions from indoor products: the product is held in a test chamber and measured against limits for total volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde and a long list of individual substances, with the Gold tier set at the stricter level written for schools, healthcare and other sensitive interiors. ERKE has taken 62 products through to GREENGUARD Gold certification.

The same separation applies here. ERKE prepares the product for certification: it plans the emissions testing, compiles the formulation and process data the laboratory needs, and manages the submission. UL Solutions runs the certification programme and issues the certificate. ERKE does not certify products and does not issue certificates.

Why a specifier asks for it

Under LEED’s Indoor Environmental Quality section, the Low-Emitting Materials credit is earned by showing that the paints, coatings, adhesives, flooring, ceilings, walls and insulation actually installed meet emissions limits. A current GREENGUARD Gold certificate is one of the recognised ways a product demonstrates that, which is why interior specifiers on certified projects ask for it by name. For a manufacturer selling into those projects, holding the declaration and the emissions certificate for the same product answers both halves of the question in one go.

Where those 62 certifications sit

  • Tile and porcelain surfaces — 15, including glazed porcelain tile, floor and wall tile, and large-format porcelain ceramic sheet
  • Plasterboard and gypsum board — 13, including fire-resistant, waterproof and combined fire and water resistant boards
  • Curtains and interior textiles — 13
  • Sandwich and façade panels — 6
  • Plasters — 7, covering satin finishing plaster, polishing plaster, joint and filling plaster and gypsum-based machine plaster
  • Paint — 2
  • Ground mortar and floor levelling screed — 2
  • Lighting — 2
  • Office furniture — 1
  • Piping systems — 1

FDES, for the French market

The Fiche de Déclaration Environnementale et Sanitaire is the declaration format the French construction market works to, and it sits alongside the EPD rather than replacing it. Seven FDES are in progress for tile, porcelain and sanitaryware producers.

Why Iraq

No Iraqi law requires an EPD. Your customers' certification systems do.

Iraq has no EPD programme, no Life Cycle Assessment regulation and no green public procurement rule. We state that plainly because the opposite claim would be the most damaging falsehood we could put on this site. The driver is not local law — it is export access and the certification systems your buyers work under.

  • LEED v4 MRc2. A product-specific Environmental Product Declaration counts as a whole product toward the credit; an industry-average or generic one counts as half. Specifiers know the difference.
  • BREEAM International New Construction Mat 01. One credit where at least five specified and installed products carry verified EPDs; the exemplary level is ten.
  • Gulf and Turkish buyers ask for declarations in tender documents, and international tenders increasingly list them as a submission requirement.

The route to register is already open to an Iraqi manufacturer: the International EPD System's MENA regional office lists Iraq in its service area, alongside Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Jordan, Morocco, Bahrain and Lebanon.

What we need from you

The work is in your production data

An EPD is arithmetic on real numbers from your plant. The modelling is our problem; the numbers have to come from you.

  • Bill of materials and formulation by mass, plus packaging materials
  • Twelve months of electricity, fuel and thermal energy consumption, allocated per product line, with the grid mix
  • Inbound raw-material transport distances and modes
  • Outbound distribution distances, weighted by destination
  • Process water use
  • Production waste and its disposal or recovery route
  • Production volumes for the reference year
